A pass on the turkey

I'm cooking this Thanksgiving. My mom & her guy aren't going out of town and we're not going to SC to mooch off of my brother & sis in law, so I figured I'd cook this year. I have no good experience cooking whole turkeys. That's okay, because I don't love turkey. If my hubby really wanted it, I'd probably give it another go. Since he was not wanting another turkey fiasco not insistent on a turkey, we're having ham instead. Precooked ham. Heat & serve. You can't mess that up, and it allows me to concentrate on all the yummy sides.

On a crafty note, I made some napkin rings for Thanksgiving. Super easy; I gathered all the paper towel rolls for a while (toilet paper rolls work just as fine), cut them down to approximately 2 inch pieces(of course you can go bigger or smaller). I have six people slated for dinner, so that's how many I made. (duh!) I used some satin ribbon in brown and orange, heat treated the edges and simply hot glued them onto the rings to cover completely. When finished, I pulled off some leaves from a fall garland, and hot glued one onto each ring. I picked the side with the seams and found that it hid them well. I would've taken a picture with the napkins in them, but I have to remember where I put the fall napkins.. Ugh.

How about you? Do you love turkey on Thanksgiving? Do you do anything 'unconventional'?

Can't say I could skip the turkey since I usually love it, but ham sounds really good too! I remember my freshman year of college, I couldn't be with family and I was very ill so I couldn't even get to the dining hall. My thanksgiving meal that year was a microwaved turkey pot pie. I should've skipped the turkey!

My MIL does all the cooking for Thanksgiving.. I just host the event.. :) But she makes a Turkey, and a Prime Rib.. and a bunch of Italian dishes.. too much food.. but her side of the family is so picky she makes everything..

Love the napkin rings..so creative!!

You are so freakin' creative! Really pretty!

And I despise traditional Thanksgiving food. Turkey included. But this year I am going to give brining the turkey a whirl and see if that improves things.

I usually do the traditional thing...because that is whay everyone wants. If it was up to me, we'd do an appetizer buffett.

And in deference to me...I like to have one thing on the menu that makes you go "huh?" And this year it's shrimp scampi :-)

I could skip the turkey, no problem. But I found out my husband's family was coming to our house. Before we found this out, we were planning on going to Waffle House.

I say, skip the cooking and just do the crafts. :O) Your napkin rings are really cute!

Last year my SIL and brother hosted with roast. It was delicious!

This year we may add some unconventional side dishes.

Love the napkin rings!!! We went to my parents this year and they cooked. Turkey was part of the dinner even though I could go without.
